This lapel pin is based on the Presidential Service Badge, which was preceded by the White House Service Badge created through an Executive Order by President Dwight Eisenhower on 1 June 1960. Intended to recognize the service at the White House of Armed Forces personnel other than Presidential aides, the Badge was issued with a corresponding White House Certificate based upon the recommendation of a Presidential Army, Navy, or Air Force aide; the Badge was worn as part of the uniform while serving at the White House, while the Certificate was not issued until after a year of duty.
President Lyndon Johnson replaced this badge with the Presidential Service Badge via Executive Order 11174 issued 1 September 1964. The new badge was appointed to military aides, as well as the staff and personnel serving a variety of White House Agencies and functions, including the Communications Agency, Travel Agency, Medical Unit, Mess Facility, at Camp David, aboard Air Force One / Marine Force One, and so forth. The badge and lapel pin are issued after one year of satisfactory service.
