A white (silver) cross set on a red background forms the focal point of the Shoulder Sleeve Insignia worn by Puerto Rico Army National Guard (ARNG) personnel serving in the Puerto Rico National Guard’s Joint Force Headquarters (HQ). It alludes to the fact that San Juan, the territory’s capital and home of the Headquarters of the Puerto Rico National Guard, was one of the first Christian communities ever established in America in 1508.
A trio of wavy bars of blue and white are a standard heraldic symbol of water that not only allude to San Juan’s status as a harbor, but also to Puerto Island as an island. The two towers o the left and right recall the fortress of El Moro, originally the harbor’s primary defense that now stands as a symbol of the Puerto Rican Army National Guard to defend the its Homeland and stand against aggressors. The overall design of the towers and cross, along with the colors of yellow and red, allude to the discovery and settlement of the island by Spain and recall its heritage and culture.
