The General Officer grade of O-8 is designated Major General in the Army, Air Force, and Marine Corps and Rear Admiral, Upper Half in the Navy and Coast Guard and is represented by two silver stars, a rank insignia that was first used for Major Generals in the U.S. Army in 1780.
When wearing Garrison Caps in the Navy, Coast Guard, and Marines, Rear Admirals and Major Generals wear the two silver star on the right side of the cap. In the Navy / Coast Guard, the insignia is placed so that its center is 1.5" from the bottom of the cap and 2” from the front crease. Marine Corps rules specify the insignia should be placed so that the fold that arcs downward from the front of the cap bisects the stars and the insignia intersects the fold at its midpoint. In all three services, stars are worn in a point-to-point configuration with a single ray pointing upward.
