RHODE ISLAND ARMY NATIONAL GUARD ELEMENT, JOINT FORCE HQ UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The Rhode Island Army National Guard Element, Joint Force Headquarters Distinctive Unit Insignia was originally approved for the State Staff and State Detachment, Rhode Island National Guard on 20 February 1931. It would remain effective for nearly four full decades until 3 December 1970 and its redesignation to the HQ and HQ Detachment, Rhode Island Army National Guard. Another long period would elapse—almost 33 years—before the insignia was given its current designation.

Though not a direct copy, the anchor on this insignia is inspired by the one found on the Seal of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. “Hope,” the state motto, appears on both this insignia and on the State Seal, but is placed above the anchor on the latter; the dark blue color used on both the insignia and the State Seal represents the critical importance of the sea and its bounty to the tiny state of Rhode Island in all aspects of its civic and commercial history.

East Greenwich, Rhode Island is the home of Joint Force Headquarters, Rhode Island National Guard.
