Note: Ensure that the size description you choose in the selection box matches the size you need for your ribbon or medal.
Large: 5/16-inch
Small: 3/16-inch
Miniature: 1/8-inch
Silver star attachments are the only star attachments that are issued in three sizes: 5/16-inch, 3/16-inch, and 1/8-inch. The 5/16-inch silver star is used in place of five gold stars of the same size, which are used to denote subsequent awards of the same personal military decoration issued by the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard (they are also used by the Public Health Service and National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration). This is in contrast with the Army and Air Force, which use oak leaf clusters to denote subsequent personal military awards.
No more than five 5 of the 5/16-inch silver stars (indicating 26 awards) may be worn on a suspension or service ribbon, and no more than five of any combination of 5/16-inch gold and silver stars may be worn on a ribbon at one time. When a servicemember reaches the 15th award, for instance, a second ribbon must be employed, which can be removed with the issuance of the 16th award (three 5/16-inch silver stars equals 15 awards + the ribbon equals one award = 16).
The 3/16-inch silver star is worn in lieu of five bronze service stars on the suspension or service ribbon, while the 1/8-inch silver stars performs the same function on the suspension ribbon of miniature medals. Service stars are used not only to denote subsequent awards of the same decoration, but also participation in campaigns or battles.
Regardless of the size, the silver star attachment is always worn with one point upward.
