The Shoulder Sleeve Insignia (unit patch) worn by personnel of the South Dakota Army National (ARNG) Guard, Joint Force Headquarters (HQ) features a blue shield with a yellow (gold) border, the same colors used for the twisted wreath upon which a coyote is standing. Blue and yellow are the colors of France and are used to indicate that the territory that makes up today’s South Dakota was originally a part of the Louisiana Purchase. The coyote is indigenous to South Dakota.
Since October 2003, this insignia has been authorized for the South Dakota ARNG Element, Joint Force HQ, South Dakota National Guard. From 1951 to 1983, it was approved for the HQ and HQ Detachment, South Dakota National Guard, and from 1983 until it was worn by HQ, State Area Command, South Dakota ARNG.
