UNITED STATES SOUTHERN COMMAND UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

The United States Southern Command Distinctive Unit Insignia was prepared and approved by General Robert W. Porter, Jr., the Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Southern Command from 1965 to 1969. A spread-winged eagle dominates the upper portion of the insignia’s shield, vigilantly watching over Central and South America, the Caribbean islands, and the Atlantic Ocean.

Southern Command’s area of interest includes all the land south of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea (including a dozen island nations and several European territories), waters adjacent to Central and South America, and a portion of the Atlantic Ocean. One of its major responsibilities is the defense of the Panama Canal.

U.S. Southern Command It is one of eleven Unified Combatant Commands. It was established on 6 June 1963 through the redesignation of the Caribbean Command.
