United States Air Force Lieutenant Colonels wear full-size, pin-on
rank insignia on the left (viewer’s right) side of the Flight Cap. Roughly centered between the bottom of the cap and the braid along the overlapping edge, the insignia is positioned so that the stem of the oak leaf is pointing toward the ground and the leading edge of the oak leaf is 1.5” inch from the cap’s front crease.
Authorized for both men and women, the Flight Cap is worn with the Service Dress, Service, Flight Duty, and Air Force Food Services uniforms. When not worn, the Flight Cap is tucked under the belt on the wearer’s left, not folded over it, between the first and second belt loops. It must not be visible below the service coat when stowed in this manner.
The miniature version is authorized for wear by Lieutenant Colonels serving as Air Liaison and Tactical Air Control Officers, Weather Parachutists, Pararescue Personnel and Combat Rescue Officers (CROs), or Special Tactics Officers. It is worn centered and directly below the flash device on the beret, with the flash device no more than 1/8th of an inch above the rank insignia. The bottom edge of the Miniature device should be level with immediately next to the black border trim of the beret.
Miniature pin-on metal insignia were previously authorized for optional wear on shirt collars when shirts were worn as outer garments, but this regulation was rescinded at some point in the 1970s.
