This 1/2-inch braid is worn by Officers on each of the sleeves of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) Coat. It is placed three inches above and parallel to the sleeve hem. If authorized, officers will wear Overseas Service Bars above it on the right sleeve, while the braid is the only ornamentation or insignia worn by Officers on the bottom of the left sleeve.
The use of a single sleeve braid differs significantly from the wear guidance of older Service Uniforms. On the Green Service Uniform that was officially discontinued in 2015, for example, Generals wore a 1.5-inch black braid on the sleeves, while all other Officers wore a braid that was only half as wide (.75-inch) and Enlisted Soldiers wore no braid. With the blue Army Service Uniform, Generals and Officers wear gold sleeve braids of the same width as the black ones for the Green Service Uniform, and Enlisted Soldiers wear a single gold-colored, 1/8-inch soutache braid.
