One aspect of the Class A Army Green Uniform that was retained for the Army Service Uniform was the use of ornamental braids on the pants legs to indicate a category of rank. In terms or ornamental trouser braid, regulations delineate four rank categories: General Officers, Officers, Noncommissioned Officers, and Enlisted personnel (PVT through SPC).
This 1-inch gold braid is used on the slacks worn by Officers (O-1 to O-6, or 1LT to COL), Warrant Officers (CW2 to CW5), and Noncommissioned Officers (CPL and above). This contrasts with the 1.5-inch ornamental braid used for male ASU trousers in these ranks.
The braid is worn on the outside seam of each slack leg, sewn from the bottom of the waistband to the bottom of the leg.
Female personnel do not wear the Army blue sacks when attending social functions for which the dress-uniform variation is worn. Slacks are approved for those females whose daily duties (examples include band members of chaplains) make their wear more appropriate than the Army blue skirt.
