U.S. ARMY 114TH CAVALRY REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 114th Cavalry Regiment Distinctive Insignia, often referred to as a unit crest, was approved 24 June 1981—a date made more interesting by the fact that it’s forty years after the 114th Cavalry Regiment, nicknamed "Prairie Sentinels," was redesignated in another branch because its parent unit, the 24th Cavalry Division, was disbanded as the Army eliminated all its National Guard Cavalry units.

Yellow is the color traditionally associated with Cavalry. The blue has been adapted from the Kansas State Flag. The spur rowel refers to the unit's designation and reflects the multifaceted mission and capabilities of Cavalry. The sheaf of wheat on the blue background alludes to the unit's home location in Kansas, often called the bread basket of the United States. The embattled division of the shield symbolizes defense and the purpose of a National Guard unit.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Organized in part with troops from the First Separate Kansas Cavalry Squadron and in part from National Guard Cavalry units from northwestern states, the 114th Cavalry Regiment was constituted in 1921 to round out the 24th Cavalry division. Besides the 114th Cavalry Regiment, it also comprised the 113th, 115th, and 116th Cavalry Regiments. In 1940, the Division was inactivated and the 114th removed from it and converted into the 127th Field Artillery Regiment
