On 1 October 2016, a Reorganization Activation Ceremony was held at the Gowen Field Parade Grounds in Boise, Idaho to mark the deactivation of the 116th Brigade Special Troops Battalion (BSTB) and its reorganization and concurrent activation as the 116th Brigade Engineer Battalion. The transition was somewhat fitting in that the BSTB—also referred to as Special Troops Battalion, 116th Cavalry Brigade Combat Team—was originally organized in 2007 from the 116th Engineer Battalion, a lineage commemorated with the inclusion of an embattled tower at the base of the 116th Brigade Special Troops Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia (see below).
As of Summer 2023, the 116th Brigade Engineer Battalion remains in the Idaho Army National Guard. Assigned to the 116th Brigade Combat Team, the Battalion has Headquarters are in Twin Falls and Engineer units under its command based in Gooding, Grangeville, Moscow, Mountain Home, and Orofino. Its signal and military intelligence companies are located in Boise and its forward support company is stationed in Jerome.

Like the unit crests of many Special Troops Battalions, the Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI) of the 116th BSTB is charged with images that invoke the branches of the Battalion’s component units. In the upper portion of the shield is a lighting flash crossed with a gray dagger with blue detailing; the flash stands for modern electronic communications and represents Signal Corps units within the Battalion, and the dagger reflects the cover nature of Military Intelligence functions of the Brigade Combat Team. The wavy snake is an allusion to the Snake River Valley, the area where the unit was first organized. A trio of stars at the top of the shield are a reference to stars found on the flag of Iraq, where the Combat Team earned battle honors during Operation Iraqi Freedom. AD CAPULUM, the unit motto, is Latin for “To The Hilt.”
Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
