U.S. ARMY 118TH FIELD ARTILLERY BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 118th Field Artillery Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia, commonly known as a unit crest or as a DUI for short, features a boar’s head adorned with oak branches and acorns. It is a design that was adapted from the crest of James Ogelthorpe, founder of the colony of Georgia. The boar  was selected because it is symbolic of courage and hospitality, yet is ferocious in attack. White and red used in the wreath are references to the English origins of the first Caucasian settlement in the colony.

Distinctive Unit Insignias is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Although the brigade was not formed until May 1978, the lineage and heritage of its predecessor units endowed it with credit for a Revolutionary War campaign, five Confederate Civil War campaigns, a World War I Victory streamer (uninscribed), and five World War II campaigns. The Brigade would be redesignated as the 118th Field Artillery Regiment on 1 September 1992 when it was consolidated with the 230th Field Artillery Regiment, with the newly formed unit being assigned the old 118th Artillery Distinctive Unit Insignia (it had been rescinded in the 1970s) and this one being discontinued now that the Brigade no longer existed.
