U.S. ARMY 123RD BRIGADE SUPPORT BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

The Distinctive Unit Insignia of the 123rd Brigade Support Battalion, sometimes referred to as the 123rd Support Battalion, was originally approved for the 1st Armored Division Maintenance Battalion on 13 October 1942. Like many unit crests, it has been redesignated for wear when the unit was given a new designation; these include the 123rd Ordnance Maintenance Battalion, 123rd Armored Ordnance Maintenance Battalion, 123rd Ordnance Battalion, 123rd Maintenance Battalion, and 123rd Support Battalion.

Green and white were the colors of Armored units when the insignia was first approved and have been retained to recall the organization’s origins. In the center of the insignia is the forge of Hephaestus, the Greek blacksmith of the Gods (Vulcan to the Romans) who rules over terrestrial fire and volcanic eruptions and is the patron of by blacksmiths, metalworkers, carpenters, sculptors, metallurgists. The image gives double meaning to the 123rd Support Battalion of “Forging Onward,” as in forging metal or moving ahead.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 123rd Brigade Support Battalion has been assigned to the 1st Armored Division since it was activated in 1942. Nicknamed “Iron Support,” the Battalion is currently (2023) assigned to the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division.
