U.S. ARMY 16TH AVIATION BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 16th Aviation Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), or unit crest, was approved on 30 December 1966. A falcon symbolizes the aerial nature of the organization. The ropelike device is a lure, an object used in falconry to recall hawks (aided by the promise of a large reward when they do come back). Combined with the hawk’s rest on which the falcon is perched, it simulates a “16” to denote the organization’s numerical designation. PARATI – RESPONDERE, the unit motto, is Latin for “Ready To Respond.”

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been
authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1
, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Constituted 5 August 1963 in the Regular Army as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 16th Aviation Battalion, the unit was activated on 26 August 1963 in Germany and was subsequently redesignated as HQ and HQ Detachment, 16th Aviation Battalion in June 1964. Nearly three years later, it was given its original designation as HQ and HQ Company, 16th Aviation Battalion on 6 June 1967; it kept this designation until it was inactivated on 18 August 1972.

When it was originally organized, the Battalion comprised the HQ and HQ Company, 14th Air Traffic Control, 122nd Aviation Company, 60th Aviation Company, and the 11th Transportation Detachment. When the three Companies were reassigned to the 15th Combat Aviation Group in December 1966, they were replaced by three new Companies: 4th Aviation, 67th Aviation, and 349th Aviation.

4th Aviation Company was a rotary-wing transport unit that carried both personnel and materiel in support of VII Corps, while 67th Aviation Company employed both helicopters and fixed-wing assets to carry out transportation, observation, and general utility functions for HQ, VIII Corps. The 349th Aviation Company was a light air-mobile cargo and troop transport unit that supported the Corps as well as its subordinate units. (Note: H/T to the
