The Distinctive Unit Insignia of the 183rd Regiment was approved on 21 November 2006, the same years in which the Regiment, along with the 183rd Cavalry Regiment, was formed from the 183rd Infantry Regiment. The focal point of the insignia is the lamp of knowledge on the blue field; it symbolizes the mission of the Regiment and the National Guard to train Soldiers at the Virginia Army National Guard’s Regional Training Institute and provide them with the skills and data to succeed in both peacetime endeavors and actions taken in the midst of a national emergency.
In the chief (horizontal yellow band in the top portion of the shield), a blue disc emphasizes the devotion to the Regiment’s training cadre to prepare Soldiers for the challenges they will face in both their career field and on the field of battle. Upon the disc is a dogflower, the state flower of the Regiment’s home state of Virginia. A red, yellow, and blue canton (inset) signifies the Regiment’s association with U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) and the Total Army School System. INSTRUCTIS ARMIS, the unit motto, is Latin for “Train The Force.”
More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
