U.S. ARMY 189TH INFANTRY BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1
, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 189th Infantry Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia, or unit crest, was approved on 25 May 2007. “Swift And Lethal” is the unit motto, recalling the units’ effectiveness in combat while serving with the 95th Division during World War II as the 95th Reconnaissance Troop (Mechanized). An upright bayonet symbolizes the primary close combat mission of Infantry units, and the Brigade’s heritage as an Infantry unit is also highlighted by the flag blue combined with white and red to form the national colors, with red standing for patriotism.

Beginning in 2006, the 189th Infantry Brigade served as training unit that specialized in training Provincial Reconstruction Teams (PRTs) before they are deployed to Afghanistan to help rebuild and secure that nation’s infrastructure and social constructs. In 2007, professional trainers of the Brigade became the first ever to lead more than 1,000 personnel comprising a dozen PRTs in simultaneous theater-immersion training conducted at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

As of Winter 2024, the 189th Infantry Brigade is a U.S. Army Reserve unit assigned to First Army Division West and headquartered at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington. It is designated as a Combined Arms Training Brigade and is tasked with observing, coaching, and training personnel from the Army National Guard and Army Reserve to prepare them to support combatant commander requirements anywhere in the world.
