Commonly called a unit crest or a DUI, the Distinctive Unit Insignia of the Special Troops Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division was approved for wear on 16 September 2010.
This image-rich insignia pays homage to the histories of both the Battalion and the 1st Armored Division. A black and gold betressed pale (vertical bar) simulates the appearance of a tank track to point to the parent Division’s branch affiliation, as do the colors green and yellow which have long been associated with Armored organizations.
While the precise makeup of Special Troops Battalions can vary, those designated as Brigade Special Troops Battalions typically have a HQ and HQ Company with platoons from the Military Police, Maintenance, Support, Medical, and perhaps Chemical branches and Companies from the Signal, Engineer, and Military Intelligence.
Here the subordinate Companies the 2nd Brigade Combat Team’s Special Troop Battalion are represented by the double-warded key, suggesting security and alluding to the Military Intelligence component; a lightning flash is for the speed at which Signal Corps units transmit and receive information; and a brick wall is for the Construction mission of the Corps of Engineers. OPTIMUS SUSCIPIO, the Battalion motto, is Latin for “Support The Best.”
