Also known as a unit crest or DUI, the Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
The Distinctive Unit Insignia of the 1st Combined Arms Battalion, 5th Brigade, 1st Armored Division was approved on 15 May 2008. It consists of a gold-trimmed shield with a dark blue field and an attached green scroll containing the Battalion motto “Courageous And Versatile” inscribed in gold. The dark blue is the color of Infantry, while the yellow (gold) border of the shield is the color of Armor—the two line branches that form the Battalion. Inside the shield is an equilateral triangle with a lightning bolt superimposed over it and a five-pointed star in the upper-left corner. The triangle is an emblem of success brought about by changes in the Armored forces, and the star is an emblem recalling the state of Texas.

The 5th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division was designated as the Army Evaluation Task Force (AETF), an organization given the mission of testing and evaluating the effectiveness and usability of proposed Army weapons and equipment developed as part of the Army's Future Combat Systems (FCS) introduced in 2003. The 1st Combined Arms Battalion was inactivated in 2009 when the FCS was cancelled and the AETF was inactivated and its work transferred to 2nd Brigade, 1st Armored Division. In 2010, the HQ and HQ Company and three other companies of the 1st Combined Arms Battalion were issued the Army Superior Unit Award for their outstanding meritorious service between 1 October 2007 to 3 August 2009 "in support of the Army's transformation and modernization mission."
