U.S. ARMY 229TH MEDICAL BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

For Enlisted personnel, the insignia is centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 229th Medical Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved on 4 January 2010. The shield portion of the insignia is divided into two sections to highlight Echelons I and II of medical care.

Below a partition shaped like a chevron, a longtime heraldic charge denoting support that here alludes to the NCO Corps that is the backbone of the Army, the insignia is colored maroon and white (Army Medical Corps’ colors) with gold stars denoting excellence, honor, and high ideals. A caduceus on the maroon field is a symbol of the medical mission and the Command and Control of the Multifunctional Medical Battalion. Besides indicating excellence, the gold stars also represent the six branches of the Army Medical Department.

The green background of the upper portions is for growth and regeneration. A charging knight on the left is emblematic of the Multifunctional Medical Battalion’s Early Campaign to deliver medical care to the warfighter, emphasizing the individual Soldiers for whom the Battalion provides support. The crescent is taken from the seal of Missouri and is a symbol of Missouri’s “second son” status the second state formed from the territory acquired by the Louisiana Purchase.

The unit motto, IMPEDO PROVIDEO CONTEGO, is Latin for “Prevent Provide Protect.”

As of Spring 2022, the 229th Multifunctional Medical Battalion remains a unit in the Missouri Army National Guard, headquartered at Jefferson City and augmented in its mission by the 139th Medical Group.
