The 235th Base Support Battalion was created on 1 October 1991 by redesignating and reorganizing the United States Military Community Activity Ansbach (USMCA Ansbach) in Bavaria, Germany.
The changes were part of United States Army Europe’s Community Command Plan, crafted in response to the collapse of the Soviet Union and the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact, both of which decreased the number of troops deemed necessary for to ensure security of nations bordering the former Soviet state or its satellite countries.
Under the plan, the separate military communities were be consolidated into Base Support Battalions, which in turn were under the control of Area Support Groups. Under the command of the 99th Area Support Group, the 235th Base Support Battalion provided base support and essential services to military facilities and the personnel manning them, including their families, in the Ansbach, Katterbach, and Illesheim Areas. This included the Crailsheim subcommunity, home of McKee Barracks, which became an Area Support Team under the Community Command Plan.
In 2005, the 235th Base Support Battalion was inactivated and reflagged as U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach in order to adhere to the U.S. Army installation management structure called Standard Garrison Organization.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been
authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
For Enlisted personnel, the insignia is centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.
Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e),
"Beret" and
"Garrison Cap," respectively.
