Also known as a unit crest or DUI, the Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

The design of the 236th Base Support Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia pays homage to the organization’s home in Augsburg, Germany. “Bavarian Support,” the Battalion motto, is a reference to the German federal state in which the city of Augsburg is located. The shield portion of the insignia is colored red and white, the same colors used for the shield found on the Coat of Arms of Augsburg, and the pine-tree cone surmounted on the shield is also adapted from the Coat of Arms.
Active from 1991 until 2005, the 236th Base Support Battalion was created through the reorganization and redesignation of United States Military Community Activity, Augsburg on 1 October 1991. The change was part of a new structure designed to consolidate personnel and facilities in response to the troop drawdown that resulted from the collapse of the Soviet Union. Under the Plan, the Battalion was attached to the 99th Area Support Group in Nuernberg
In addition to the city of Augsburg, the 236th BSB was also responsible for the support of military personnel and their families at thirteen designated remote sites scattered between 65KM and 240KM from the city; among these were Munich, Ulm, Leipheim, Landsberg, Oberammergau, Weingarten, and Berchtesgarden.
In 2005, the Army brought the Community Command Plan to an end, inactivating the entire system of Area Support Groups, Base Support Battalions, and Area Support Teams throughout Germany and replacing it with the standardized Army installation management structure called the Standard Garrison Organization.
