Better known as a unit crest, the Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI) of the 271st Support Battalion—also called the 271st Brigade Support Battalion—was approved on 30 September 2010. This extremely colorful insignia features a blue phoenix rising from flames, a symbol of rebirth for thousands of years. Above the phoenix’s wings are a pair of olive branches, seven eagle feathers, and a calumet (ceremonial pipe), which form a reference to the unit’s numerical designation. Additionally, all these items are taken from the Oklahoma State Flag to signify the unit’s ties to the state as part of the Oklahoma Army National Guard. “Supporting The Fires” is the unit motto.
The Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

The 271st Support Battalion was originally constituted in the Oklahoma Army National Guard on 1 September 2008 and organized from both new and existing units, with the latter possessing lineages that entitled them credit for participation in four Korean War campaigns and a Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation.
Ordered into active Federal Service in August 2008, the Battalion’s outstanding service resulted in its selection for a Meritorious Unit Commendation for its service from November 2008 to August 2009. The Battalion is also credited with participation in the Global War on Terrorism campaign.
