U.S. ARMY 297TH CAVALRY REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. For Enlisted personnel, the insignia is centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 297th Cavalry Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia commonly referred to as a “unit crest” or DUI, was approved for wear on 22 February 1974. Its most prominent feature is a white chevron surmounted by a timber wolf, symbolizing Denali, the highest mountain in North America that had been named Mount McKinley until 2015; the timberwolf is native to the area and is an allusion to the unit’s aggressive stance. Above Denali are a pair of lighting flashes that represent the unit’s speed and combat power, colored yellow to denote the organization’s status as a Cavalry unit. Together, the lighting flashes and the timber wolf emphasize the unit’s nickname, “ThunderWolves.”

On 1 May 1972, the 3rd Battalion, 297th Infantry Regiment was converted and redesignated as the 297th Cavalry, a parent regiment in the Combat Arms Regimental System, but on 1 October 1976 it was broken up and converted to the 5th Battalion, 297th Infantry. More than three decades later, the 297th Infantry Regiment was converted into the 297th Cavalry Regiment, consisting of a single Squadron based at Fairbanks, Alaska. Although this iteration of the 29th Cavalry lasted longer than its forebear, it was converted and redesignated into the 1st Battalion, 297th Infantry on 16 October 2016.
