U.S. ARMY 2ND ENGINEER BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

With a trio of snow-capped mountains and the unit nickname "Arctic Trailblazers," the 2nd Engineer Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia pays tribute to its 2011 activation at Fort Richardson, Alaska after a 46-year period of inactivation. Two years earlier, it had been redesignated from 2nd Engineer Amphibious Support Command to its current role as the 2nd Engineer Brigade.

It would not call Alaska home for long, however.

For the 2nd Engineer Brigade, the inactivation ceremony held for it on 15 May 2015 at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska was a particularly bittersweet occasion: Less than two months earlier, on March 26th, it had been awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation for its service in training the Afghan Engineer Brigade during the deconstruction of bases across the country, leading to 61 of 86 bases closing or transferring to the Afghans.

The Brigade was originally constituted as the 2nd Engineer Amphibian Brigade in 1942 and was redesignated the 2nd Engineer Special Brigade, or ESB, in 1943. ESBs specialized in amphibious landings, and the 2nd ESB took part in two campaigns in the Pacific, New Guinea and Leyte, earning an arrowhead for hitting the beaches and a Philippine Presidential Unit Citation during the latter campaign. During the Korean War, the Brigade was redesignated as the 2nd Amphibious Support Brigade and took part in six campaigns, with its outstanding service recognized with the a Presidential Unit Citation for its role at Inchon and two Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citations.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
