U.S. ARMY 319TH SIGNAL BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, the Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam.

The Distinctive Unit Insignia of the 319th Signal Battalion was approved on 29 May 1957. Orange and white, the predominant colors, are the official branch colors of the Signal Corps. At the base of the shield is fire emitting puffs of smoke; the lower puff has the image of a horse and the one above it has an eagle, taken from the coats of arms of the province of Naples and Rome, respectively to denote the unit’s battle honors for service in those areas in World War II. “Together We Will” is the Battalion motto.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia."

Originally constituted as the 984th Signal Service Company in the Army of the United States on 25 June 1943, the 319th Signal Battalion is credited with the two campaigns (Naples-Foggia and Rome-Arno) that the 984th Signal Service Company took part in during World War II before inactivation in Italy on 29 May 1946.

Allotted to the Organized Reserves on 30 June 1947 and activated less than two weeks later at Tulsa, Oklahoma, the Company was reorganized and redesignated Company A, 319th Signal Battalion on 17 December 1948; it was inactivated on 16 November 1950.

On 17 July 1956, the unit was given its current designation of HQ and HQ Company, 319th Signal Battalion and activated a fortnight later on 1 August 1956. Less than three years later, on 1 April 1959, the Battalion was inactivated again—and it turned out reactivation was nearly three decades away.

Finally activated again on 17 September 1988 at Stockton, California, the Battalion would see its HQ location changes three times over the next dozen years, winding up in Sacramento on 15 January 2000. The Battalion was ordered into active military service on 7 December 2003, the start of a deployment would not officially end for eighteen months. On 3 June 2005, it was released from service and reverted back to its Reserve status.

Although its campaign participation status in the War on Terrorism is yet to be determined, the Battalion was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation for service in Iraq between January 2004 and December 2004.
