The 360th Civil Affairs Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved on 25 March 1977. Three of the tenets upon which Civil Affairs operations are based—Law, Security, and Order—are used for the Brigade’s motto inscribed in gold letters on a semi-circular purple scroll. The state of South Carolina, the unit’s home state where it is headquartered at Fort Jackson, is represented by a palmetto below the purple scroll.
Below the palmetto is an unrolled scroll and a gridlined globe. Taken together, they symbolize the Brigade’s worldwide scope of the its mission of civil affairs, alluded to also by the scroll of white and the globe of purple, branch colors of Civil Affairs. The opened scroll and globe allude to the unit's mission of civil affairs worldwide. The palmetto palm, symbolic of victory and justice, is the state tree of South Carolina, the present location of the organization. The color green represents vigor and growth, while purple and white are colors used for Civil Affairs units.
Also known as a unit crest or DUI, the Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia."
Originally designated as the 360th Civil Affairs Area when it was first constituted and activated on 6 January 1966 at its current home base of Fort Jackson, South Carolina, the Brigade was reorganized and redesignated with its current name and organizational status on1 June 1975. Its battle honors include two of the three campaigns in the First Gulf War of 1990-1991, as well the Global War on Terrorism campaign from the War on Terror (with additional campaign participation to be determined).
