Originally designated for the 395th Supply and Service Battalion on 19 February 1971, this insignia was also designated for the 395th Quartermaster Battalion from 16 September 1996 to 17 September 2006, but with revised description and symbolism. These remained intact when it became the Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI) of the 395th Support Battalion on 17 September 2006, which later served as the 395th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion.
Buff and yellow, predominant colors for this insignia, signify the Battalion’s former role in Supply and Service, while blue is a reference to the organization’s service in the Quartermaster branch; the blue fleur-de-lis pointer alludes to Northern France, site of the unit’s activation and campaigning in World War II.
The decoration in the center with eight “points” is an escarbuncle, a heraldic charge that is inspired by the patterns of iron bands attached to the backs of shields to make them stronger; here it is an allusion to the organization’s basic Support mission. Key sections are a reference to the Supply function, and the grape leaves are an adaptation of the three grape vines that are charges on Connecticut state seal. “The Nucleus of Support” is the motto of the 395th Support Battalion.
Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia."
