Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been
authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
For Enlisted personnel, the insignia is centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.
More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e),
"Beret" and
"Garrison Cap," respectively.
The 3rd Maneuver Enhancement Brigade was a Support unit based at Fort Richardson, Alaska. The mission of the Brigade was to improve the movement capabilities and rear-area security for Commanders at the Division level or higher and consisted of a HQ and HQ Company and three Battalions (Combat Sustainment Support, Military Police, and Engineer). It was replaced by the 2d Engineer Brigade following its inactivation in 2011.
The 3rd Maneuver Enhancement Brigade’s Distinctive Unit Insignia, or unit crest, points to its home base of Fort Richardson, Alaska with a graphic of snow-capped mountains on a shield, with the base of the mountains roughly dividing the shield in half. In the lower half are three colored stripes representing the branch colors of three important components of a Maneuver Enhancement Brigade: Red for Engineer, Green for Military Police, and Cobalt Blue for Chemical (the Brigade’s 17th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion included the 95th Chemical Company).
Three words—RESOLVE PROTECTION STRENGTH—form the Brigade’s motto and are an oblique reference to the Brigade’s numerical designation, as are the three colored stripes. Crossed swords represent military preparedness to support combat action, and gold throughout the insignia represents excellence.
