U.S. ARMY 412TH SUPPORT BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

For Enlisted personnel, the insignia is centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Originally approved for the 412th Support Brigade on 31 July 2009, this Distinctive Unit Insignia—commonly referred to as a “unit crest”—was worn by the 412th Contracting Support Brigade up until its inactivation in April 2017.

The Brigade was assigned to Army Contracting Command, a major subordinate command of United States Army Materiel Command (AMC), and the red, white, and blue tones used in the design of the insignia point to the AMC as the Brigade’s parent command. An upright sword is a symbol of the protection of the Homeland, the Brigade’s penultimate mission, through a constant state of readiness and vigilance.

Three stars are emblems denoting the three primary components of Army Contracting Command: Expeditionary Contracting Commands, Mission Installation Contracting Commands (MICC), and Contracting Centers. The inscription on the blue scrolls, MUNDUS GENUS PACTUM SUSCIPIO, is the unit motto, Latin for “World Class Contracting Support.”

Army Contracting Command (ACC) was established on 1 October 2008 as a major subordinate command of the U.S. Army Materiel Command, itself of the Army’s four major Commands along with Forces Command (FORSCOM), Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), and Futures Command (AFC). Responsible for the performing the lion’s share of contracting work for the Army, the ACC has been streamlined over the years since its establishment, with more authority placed in Mission Installation Contracting Commands.

In the case of the inactivation of the 412th Contracting Command, much of its mission was handed to the Field Directorate Office-Fort Sam Houston, directly subordinate to the MICC. FDO-Sam Houston assumed the provision of contracting support for the mission partners the Brigade had been working with, as well as the oversight of contracting offices at six military installations.
