Also known as a unit crest or DUI, the Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,

“Advise Provide Lead,” motto of the 422nd Civil Affairs Battalion, is written on a purple scroll in white (silver) text—the primary and secondary colors of the Civil Affairs Branch—found on the base of its Distinctive Unit Insignia. The silvers wings are a refence to the unit’s Airborne tradition, also reflected in the unit’s authorization for
Airborne background trimming, also called an
oval, to be worn behind Parachutist and Air Assault badges earned by Battalion personnel.
A gridlined globe signifies the unit’s ability to deploy worldwide to execute its Civil Affairs mission while the lightning flash denotes the ability to do in speedy fashion. The sword crossing the flash commemorates the Battalion’s participation in Special Operations Forces activities, and the inclusion of the scroll represents the basic mission of Civil Affairs organizations.
The 422nd Civil Affairs Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), or unit crest, was authorized on 7 January 1998.
Headquartered at McLeansville, North Carolina, the 422nd Civil Affairs Battalion is assigned to the 354th Civil Affairs Brigade. It was deployed to Afghanistan in June 2021, just weeks away from the start of the collapse of the Afghan National Security Forces, the ascendance of the Taliban, and ultimately the evacuation of American armed forces from the country.
