U.S. ARMY 42ND ADJUTANT GENERAL BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 42nd Adjutant General Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, commonly referred to as a unit crest or DUI for short, was approved on 15 January 1988. It features a dark blue shield with a gold border and a red scroll with the unit motto, IMPELLITE MILITEN (“Start The Soldier”) inscribed in gold. Dark blue and red are the branch colors of the Adjutant General’s Corps, while gold is used to denote excellence and high ideals.

On the shield are an upright sword bookended by a pair of oak branches with acorns. The sword denotes military preparedness; oak is the symbol of strength in military heraldry (it is also our national tree); and acorns are the symbol of beginning and growth because. The acorns are a visual reinforcement of the unit motto: a warfighting unit cannot even get started without the services provided by the Adjutant General’s Corps.

Guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

No longer an active unit, the 42d Adjutant General Battalion was constituted in the Army of the United States on 27 December 1942 and activated on 25 February 1943 at New Orleans, Louisiana. After taking part in operations in Normandy and Northern France (it earned streamers for these two campaigns), it was inactivated on 17 September 1945. It appears to have been active again the 1980s and 1990s, but unfortunately the U.S. Army Center of Military History has no information on the unit.
