The 436th Medical Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, also called a unit crest or DUI for short, was approved with an effective date of 18 September 1993.
A shield of maroon and white reflects the fact that the 436th Medical Battalion is an Army Medical Department organization—although the presence of a red cross surmounted on the center of the shield likely conveyed that information at first blush. Gold trim on the cross denotes excellence in the provision of medical care and assistance to those in need. According to The Institute of Heraldry, the Battalion did not have an official motto to display on its DUI.
Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia."
The 436th Medical Battalion was originally constituted as HQ and HQ Detachment, 436th Medical Battalion on 17 January 1944 and was activated two months later on 10 March 1944 in Northern Ireland. Deployed to the European Theater, the unit would take part in five campaigns—Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, Central Europe—before returning to the U.S. and being inactivated at Camp Myles Standish, Massachusetts.
Allotted to the Organized Reserve Corps on 5 November 1948 and activated at the end of November in Greenville, Texas, the Battalion was subsequently inactivated a little over two years later on 15 December 1950 while still located in Greenville. It would remain inactive until 18 September 1993 when it was reactivated at Mesquite, Texas.
Unfortunately, this is where the unit’s history ends at the U.S. Army Center of Military History’s Web page devoted to the Battalion’s lineage, honors, and history.
