U.S. ARMY 630TH SUPPORT BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Better known as a “unit crest,” the 630th Support Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI) was approved 21 June 2007. Today, it is used and worn by the 630th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion. The red used for the chevron and the buff (tan) used for the stylized mountain range and pale (vertical bar) in the center of the insignia are the colors traditionally used for Support units and organizations. The chevron is a longstanding symbol of support in heraldry, with the stars on this chevron signifying Command & Control responsibilities.

Placed throughout the rest of the insignia are images that allude to the branches of the units that make up this multifunctional Support unit. A spoked wheel in the upper left is for Transportation functions; the pellet (black disc) simulates a gunstone and thus the Ordnance mission; and the crossed keys behind it are for the Quartermaster components in the Battalion. The bayonet on the pale is a reference to the Battalion’s support of combat units in Operations Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom and allude to the unit motto, “Cutting Edge.” Behind the tip of the bayonet is a stylized mountain range that alludes to the Blue Ridge Mountains that are near the home of the unit’s headquarters in Lenoir, North Carolina.

As of Winter 2024, the 630th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion is an active unit in the North Carolina Army National Guard, where it it sassigned to the 113th Sustainment Brigade.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

For Enlisted personnel, the insignia is centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia."
