Approved on 30 August 2007, the 655th Support Group Distinctive Unit Insignia is rendered almost entirely in buff and scarlet, colors traditionally associated with Support units.
In the center is a unique image, a combination of a sword and a millrind. Those familiar with heraldry know the millrind—an iron support on the top of a pair of millstones—is a common image used to denote support. Here, the addition of the sword alludes to support in the form of security, force protection, control, and other military support functions provided by the Group.
The green bar adds an additional layer of symbolism: it is a reference to Hazardous Materials and Life-Support programs and organizational compliance with environmental ordnances. Gold is the color of excellence and high achievement. “Strength In Unity” is the Group motto.
Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia."

Now serving as the 655th Regional Support Group, the unit was originally constituted as HQ and HQ Company, 655th Support Group in the Army Reserve on 31 December 1998 and activated on 16 April 1999 at Devens, Massachusetts. It is not clear when the unit was redesignated from a Support Group to a Regional Support Group.
The Group has been called to active military service at least twice since the launch of the War on Terrorism, the first time in October 2004 to September 2006. During a 2012 callup, the Group was deployed in support Operation Enduring Freedom, and in 2014 its HQ and HQ Detachment was tapped for a Meritorious Unit Commendation for its outstanding service between February and December 2012. The Group’s efficiency and ability to multitask while providing installation readiness and superior base camp services and establishing a variety of quality of life and Soldier resiliency programs led to savings of tens of millions of dollars.
When not called into active military service, the Group is assigned to the 316th Expeditionary Command, a major subordinate command of the 377th Theater Sustainment Command. It is headquartered at Chicopee, Massachusetts and exercises command over two Quartermaster Battalions (167th and 334th), two Combat Sustainment Support Battalions (167th and 395th), and a Transportation Battalion (719th).
