Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device.
It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
For Enlisted personnel, the insignia is centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.
Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e),
"Beret" and
"Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 687th Support Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia was originally approved for the 687th Supply and Service Battalion, along with its Coat of Arms, on 7 October 1968. Both the Coat of Arms and unit crest were redesignated for the 687th Quartermaster Battalion on 16 September 1996 and again on 17 September 2006 for the 687th Support Battalion. Today the insignia is worn by the 687th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion.
An Eagle’s head in the center of the insignia is taken from the Coat of Arms of the Rhine Province, a reference to the Battalion’s service in that area of Germany during World War II (it is credited with participation in the Rhineland campaign). Behind the Eagle’s head is a crossed pair of keys, symbolic of service; on the Coat of Arms the key is complemented by a mash (as in beer or hard alcohol) tun, or barrel, that represents supply. The unit motto, OPERA ET COMMEATUS, is Latin for “Service And Supply.”
As of Winter 2024, the 687th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion is allotted to the Army Reserve and is assigned to the 646th Regional Support Group, 103rd Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), 79th Theater Sustainment Command.
