U.S. ARMY 701ST SUPPORT BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Worn by the men and women of the 701st Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, the 701st Support Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia (also called a unit crest or DUI) was originally approved on 26 May 1954 for the 701st Ordnance Corps, a fact reflected in the scarlet and yellow colors used to craft the insignia. It was redesignated for the 701st Maintenance Battalion on 31 January 1964 and was updated on 27 September 1972. When it was redesignated for the final time on 5 June 1987 for the 701st Support Battalion, the description and symbolism were updated to reflect the organization’s new mission.

A pair of crosses pattée commemorate the unit’s predecessor organization which was cited by the French Army for action at Kasserine and also at the Normandy landings. The Maltese crosses, on the other hand, stand for the two citations in the Order of the Day of The Belgian Army, one for Mons and a second Eupen-Malmedy. SERVITIUM ET COR CORDIS, the unit motto, is Latin for “Service With Courage."

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia."

In addition to its World War II military decorations and honors, the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 701st Support Battalion and several of its companies have been the recipients of at least two Meritorious Unit Commendations earned during the War on Terrorism.

One notable MUC, awarded on 20 June 2011 to the HHC and five other Battalion Companies, was for the Battalion’s support of its parent organization, the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division as it carried out stability operations in the Salah al-Din Province of Iraq between August 2009 and July 2010.

The last MUC the unit was awarded before it was inactivated was announced on 1 May 2013, with the HHC and Companies A, B, and C being cited for providing responsive, uninterrupted sustainment support not only for the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, but also the Afghan National Army stationed in Paktika and Eastern Ghazni Provinces, Afghanistan.

On 2 June 2015, the 701st Brigade support Battalion, 4th IBCT, 1st Infantry Division cased its colors during a ceremony celebrating the inactivation of both the Battalion and its parent Brigade.
