U.S. ARMY 900TH CONTRACTING BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Worn today by the personnel of the 900th Contracting Battalion, the 900th Support Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, more commonly known as a unit crest or DUI, was approved for wear on 21 June 2007. The buff tone used throughout the insignia is a color traditionally used by Support units in their heraldry and insignias. A hawk, spread-winged and clutching the globe in its talons, visually reinforces the Battalion motto of “Contingency Hawks” and is a reminder that the Battalion’s contingency missions have been undertaken both inside and outside the Continental United States. Additionally, it highlights the unit’s task of training and deploying contracting Officers and NCOs to Army units worldwide.

The stark contrast of buff and black on the shield portion of the insignia symbolizes the organization’s night-and-day, round-the-clock combat readiness, while the point-down triangular wedge is an emblem of the focus and commitment to mission success that is a hallmark of the Battalion.

Based at the Mission and Installation Contracting Command (MICC) Center on Fort Bragg, the 900th Contracting Battalion is a subordinate unit of the 419th Contracting Brigade. Activated in June 2013, as of 2016 the Brigade consisted of over 400 military and civilian personnel, six Battalion Commanders/Directors, and seventeen contracting teams based at six offices. The Brigade is subordinate to MICC, which provides support services to both Army and Air Force customers.

The Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia."
