U.S. ARMY 904TH CONTRACTING BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, the Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia."

Like the 901st Contracting Battalion, the 904th Contracting Battalion’s Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI) features a shield consisting of red, white, and blue—our National colors and the colors of the Army Materiel Command (AMC), the organization to which the Battalion is ultimately responsible as a subordinate unit of AMC’S Army Contracting Command,

The color gold signifying excellence is used liberally in the insignia, which was originally approved for the 904th Support Battalion on 30 April 2009. It contrasts with the sparsely used black, color of strength and, most importantly in this case, fiscal solvency (e.g., to be “in the black” versus “in the red”). The image of a wolf between two crossed spears howling at an unseen desert moon is an allusion to the location of the 409th Support Battalion at the National Training Center in California’s Mojave Desert before its transformation into a Contracting Battalion.

Crossed spears are a symbol of teamwork, cooperation, military preparedness, and might in both open conflict and in peacetime missions. As a whole, the device is a reference to the contracting process that is inexplicably tied to mission success in supporting the Warfighter, whether on or off the field of Battle.

“Vigilant Prospectors” is the Battalion motto.

The 904th Contracting Battalion, along with Mission and Installation Contracting Command-Fort Stewart, is a subordinate unit of the 419th Contracting Support Brigade. It is responsible for contracting the services and goods that directly support Soldiers and their families, civilians, and contract personnel serving at Fort Stewart Hunter and Hunter Army Airfield.
