Reflecting the fact that the new Heritage Green Service Cap worn with the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) was designed as a unisex cover, regulations call for a single type and size of Officer Service Cap insignia to be worn with it by both male and female Officers: the Coat of Arms of the United States measuring 2.375 inches in height and rendered in gold-colored metal.
This is contrast to the regulations for the blue Service Cap worn with the Army Service Uniform, which mandate that male Officers wear headgear of that size and design, but for female Officers to wear a smaller device (1.625” in height). This same bifurcated system also applies to the Service Cap insignia worn by male and female Enlisted personnel on the ASU Service Cap).
This change isn’t the only difference between the old ASU Service Cap and the its AGSU counterpart. Besides the obvious differences in color, the new AGSU Service Cap has been manufactured to have the famed “50 mission crush” appearance in which the middle of the cap behind the peak curves downward (though personnel are authorized to an optional insert that makes the cap rigid).
It is also much less “showy” than the ASU Service Cap, which features visor ornamentation (in the form of gold arcs of oak leaves) on Caps for Generals and Field-Grade Officers and colored hatbands on Caps for Field- and Company-Grade Officers.
