Upon completion of Bootcamp, Sailors with their eyes set on careers as Construction Electricians (CE) will attend the Class “A” Technical School at the Center for Seabees and Facilities Engineering Detachment, located on Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas. (This is also the location of the Class “A” school for Sailors pursuing a career in the Utilitiesman rating.) Here, Sailors are taught all the basics of construction—both theory and practical skills—as well as the combat skills required to serve in a Seabee battalion.
After finishing Class “A” training, CE Sailors are likely to be assigned to either a Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) or an Amphibious Construction Battalion (ACB). Those assigned to an NMCB will be serving as part of Naval Construction Group One, located at Naval Base Ventura County in Port Hueneme, California, or Naval Construction Group Two at the Naval Construction Battalion Center Gulfport in Mississippi. Amphibious Construction Battalions are currently stationed at Naval Amphibious Base Coronado (across the bay from the city of San Diego) and Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek–Fort Story in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Both NMCB and ACB duty are considered a “Challenging Assignments,” many of which offer more opportunities for advancement and which might require special types of clearance. Other assignments that fall into this class include Overseas Contingency Support; attachment to a Special Warfare (SPECWAR) or Special Operations (SPECOP) unit; providing Diplomatic Security, Counter-Intelligence, and Counter-Measure services as part of the Naval Support Unit State Department; overseeing Mobile Utilities Support Equipment (MUSE) to alleviate shortfalls in power generation for the Navy and the Department of Defense; serving on an Underwater Construction Teams; working at the Presidential retreat at Camp David; and Recruiting or serving as a Recruit Division Commander/Instructor.
