Soldiers who are officially retired from the U.S. Army (indicated on Form DD2) can show their pride of service with this Retired U.S. Army lapel pin featuring a design inspired by the Emblem of the United States Army, which was in turn derived from the War Office Seal.
In the center is a Roman cuirass (a piece of armor covering the torso) with a point-up sword emerging from it, a Phrygian cap resting on its point. Behind the cuirass are an espontoon (pike) and a musket with bayonet fixed, crossed in saltire (“x” shape). The cuirass is flanked on its left by the national colors taken from the Revolutionary War period and on its right by the flag of the Department of the Army. Below the Revolutionary war flag is a cannon and cannonballs; below the Department of the Army flag is a mortar and shell. At the bottom is the date 1778 in Roman numerals (MDCCLXXVIII), indicating the date that the War Office Seal was first officially used.
The U.S. Army Retired button (lapel pin) is worn on the left lapel by males and females, although females have the leeway to place it in a similar location on garments that lack lapels.
