U.S. NAVY HONORABLE DISCHARGE BUTTON

The United States Navy issues an Honorable Discharge button or pin (pins for women) to personnel who are entitled to the Honorable Discharge Certificate (DD 256N). Although it is possible to earn an Honorable Discharge after receiving a Non-Judicial Punishment, the chances are much less likely unless the NJP offense was extremely minor. Honorable Discharge also requires personnel to complete at least one enlistment period (six years), but if they are unable to complete the six-year enlistment on active-duty they can still receive an Honorable Discharge by fulfilling the rest of the obligation in the Navy Reserve.

The Honorable Discharge button or pin is authorized for wear on civilian clothes. Though typically worn by personnel who have been separated from the service, it may also be worn by those who received an Honorable Discharge but subsequently re-enlisted and are currently on active duty.
