U.S. ARMY SPECIAL OPERATIONS COMMAND BERET FLASH AND/OR OVAL

An Army Service Component Command based at Fort Liberty (formerly Fort Bragg) in North Carolina, the United States Army Special Operations Command has oversight and control of the Army’s various Special Operations forces. It is the largest subordinate Command of the Department of Defense’s United States Special Operation Command which oversees Special Op forces from all branches of the United States Armed Forces represented in the Department of Defense.

Both the organizational flash and background trimming, or oval, approved for U.S. Army Special Operations Command were approved on 21 February 1990. In heraldry, red is the color of courage and sacrifice and black signifies solidarity and strength, but on this insignia black almost certainly is a reference to covert operations, sometimes called “black ops.”

For the most recent guidance on the wear of the organizational flashes and background trimming, please refer to paragraph 21–32 of the January 2021 edition of DA PAM 670-1, Guide to the Wear and Appearance of Army Uniforms and Insignia.
