U.S. ARMY UNIFORMED SERVICES UNIVERSITY OF THE HEALTH SCIENCES UNIT CREST (DUI)

Frequently referred to as a “unit crest,” the Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI) worn by Army personnel serving at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences was approved for wear on 24 March 1984, five days before the organization’s Shoulder Sleeve Insignia-Military Operations in Hostile Conditions insignia (SSI-MOHC) was approved.

The design of the DUI is almost identical to that of the unit’s SSI-MOHC, with the primary differences being a gold serpent as opposed to the green used on the patch; a silver border around the shield portion of the DUI instead of gold; and a multi-layered scroll encircling most of the insignia with the unit motto DOCTRINA INVESTIGATIO CURA (Latin for “Teaching Research Care”). You can read th
e description of the SSI-MOHC to learn of the symbolism of the imagery and colors used in both insignias.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

With its main campus located at Bethesda, Maryland, the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences was established by Congressional legislation in 1972 as a postgraduate school whose students are members of the Uniformed Services of the United States. In lieu of tuition, attendance is offered free of charge in exchange for a commitment by graduates to serve in one of the Uniformed Services for a specified period. All students enter the University as Commissioned Offices at the grade of O-1 (2nd Lieutenant in the Army or Air Force, Ensign in the Navy or United States Public Health Service).

The University is home to four colleges and schools: the College of Allied Health Sciences, Daniel K. Inouye Graduate School of Nursing, Postgraduate Dental College, and the F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine at USU, the las of which was named after the Louisiana Congressman who sponsored the Legislation. The University is also home to the National Capital Consortium, a program that sponsors Graduate Medical Education in the National Capitol Region at the University, the Walter Reed National Medical Center, the Malcolm Grow Medical Clinics & Surgery Center, Joint Base Andrews, and Fort Belvoir Community Hospital.
