The Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment (HHD), 1st Military Police Group, spent all its periods of activation outside the United States. Originally constituted as HHD, 1st Military Police Service Group on 14 May 1946, the Group was activated in Germany on 1 June 1946. Just under two years later, on 20 June 1948, the Group was inactivated.
Redesignated as the HHD, 1st Military Police Group on 6 February 1964, the Group was allotted to the Regular Army and activated on Okinawa the following month (25 March 1964). After a little over nine years of service on the island, the Group was inactivated on 29 June 1973.
The centerpiece of the HHD, 1st Military Police Group Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI) is a gold castle tower, recalling the unit’s service in post-World War II Germany; superimposed upon the tower is a poInt-up black Okinawan sai, an ancient weapon once used by Okinawan Royal Police. A pair roundels bookends the castle tower; the blue and white wavy lines in the roundels indicate the two oceans that separated the Group from the United States during its only periods of active-duty service. “First And Foremost,” the unit motto is inscribed on a field of green, which along with gold is one of the primary colors associated with the Military Police.

The Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e),
"Beret" and
"Garrison Cap," respectively.
