Organizational flashes are worn only by Soldiers authorized to wear the green, maroon, or tan berets associated with Special Forces, Airborne, and Rangers units respectively (detailed guidance on authorization for wear of these berets is found in section 18-3 Beret of DA 670-1). Ovals serve as backing for any authorized Parachutists or Air Assault badge (they are officially referred to as background trimming in Army regulations).

Originally constituted in August 1950 as 1st Logistical Command, the 1st Sustainment Command (Theater) was redesignated 1st Army Field Support Command in 1970. In 1972 it was designated 1st Corps Support Command (COSCOM), and eight years later it was redesignated as 1st Support Command. It was given its current designation in 2006.
During the Vietnam War, the Command took part in 13 of the conflict’s 17 campaigns and was awarded four Meritorious Unit Citations. It garnered two more MUCs during the First Gulf War (it was credited with participation in all three of the Southwest Asia campaigns), and has been awarded several more MUCs for service in the War on Terrorism (its War on Terrorism campaign participation credits have yet to be determined).
Though headquartered in Fort Knox, the 1st Sustainment Command was stationed for many years at Fort Bragg (now Fort Liberty) to facilitate its support role for XVIII Airborne Corps. In August 2017, however, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at Fort Knox, Kentucky to celebrate the opening of the Command’s new HQ in the Continental United States. Parts of the Command are also stationed at a mission forward base in Kuwait, and has subordinate units still at Fort Liberty.
