U.S. ARMY 101ST CAVALRY 1ST SQUADRON BERET FLASH AND/OR OVAL

Organizational flashes are worn centered on the stiffener of colored berets (maroon, tan, green, brown). Junior Enlisted Soldiers and NCOs wear their Distinctive Unit Insignia or Regimental Distinctive Insignia on flashes, while Officers center their non-subdued insignia of grade on them.

Ovals are worn beneath Parachutist Badges and Air Assault badges, with the main portion of the badge centered on the oval, in the case of the Senior and Master Parachutist badges will cause the star and wreath-and-star crests respectively to project slightly above the oval. Technically known as background trimming, the oval is not counted as a separate insignia or device when worn with the badge attached. The oval-badge combination is authorized for wear on the coats and shirts of Service Uniforms (both the AGSU and blue ASU) and the blue or green Army Maternity tunics authorized for wear by female Soldiers.

The lineage of the 101st Cavalry dates back to the pre-Civil War era, and units in its lineage took part in the Civil War, War With Spain, and Mexican Expedition. Following service in World War I while assigned to the 21st Cavalry Division, the Regiment was disbanded but quickly reconstituted on 30 December 1920 and organized to consist of the 1st and 2nd New York City Cavalry Regiments; in World War II, the 1st Squadron was designated as the 101st Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron (Mechanized). It would later go to be designated as a Long-Range Surveillance Detachment but it was disbanded in August 2006.
