U.S. ARMY 101ST CAVARY REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 101st Cavalry Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia was originally approved on 3 January 1928. It was redesignated for the 101st Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron on 19 July 1944; for the 101st Armored Cavalry Regiment on 17 September 1951; for the 101st Armor Regiment on 19 April 1962; and for the 101st Cavalry Regiment on 31 October 1967.

Blue and gold colors used in the design of this insignia carry their traditional heraldic meanings—gold is excellence and high achievement, blue is for fidelity and faithfulness. The falcon in the chief is “close and belled,” which signifies that it is “Ready for service though normally at rest”—a description that perfectly describes a National Guard Regiment. Additionally, the speed of a falcon, combined with its superior eyesight and suddenness of attack, make it a prototype for the speed and power of a cavalry or armored attack.

The colors, blue and gold, in addition to their heraldic significance have been used for some years in connection with regimental athletic uniforms, etc. The falcon "close and belled" signifies "Ready for service though normally at rest," a characterization which fits a National Guard Regiment; furthermore, the speed of the falcon together with the traditional excellence of his sight and vigorous manner of attack are assumed as regimental prototypes. The three chevronels indicate the three occasions on which the organization (and units annexed into the organization) were mustered into Federal service during the period 1898-1919.

Guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Nicknamed “Wingfoot” because of the speed at which the Regiment can attack and with a unit motto of “To The Utmost,” the 101st Cavalry Regiment can trace its origins to the organization of the 10th Regiment in the New York State Militia from new and existing companies on 29 December 1860—and from that point the Regiment's dizzying history of reorganizations, redesignations, activations/inactivations, and annexations makes for some excruciatingly difficult reading that requires a flow chart for complete comprehension. Battle honors for the Regiment include one Civil War campaign, one campaign from the War with Spain, six World War I campaigns, five World War II campaigns (one with an Arrowhead for an assault landing), and two Meritorious Unit Commendations for individual Companies or Troops taking part in War on Terrorism campaigns.

As of Autumn 2023, the Regiment is represented by a single squadron, the 2nd, which is assigned to the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 42nd Infantry Division, New York Army National Guard. Its Headquarters and Headquarters Troop are stationed at Niagara Falls.
