The 106th Support Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, commonly called a unit crest or DUI for short, was approved on 23 September 1975. Its imagery pays homage to the unit’s home state of Mississippi, where the Battalion is a part of the Mississippi Army National Guard. “We Shall Provide,” the Battalion motto, is inscribed in blue—the color of fidelity and loyalty—on a silver scroll that serves as the base for the shield portion of the insignia. On the shield, the canton (small rectangular inset) at the top left mimics the canton of the Mississippi state flag, featuring an adaptation of the Confederate Battle Flag. In the upper right is a lone star that symbolizes guidance and leadership; in the lower left, a fret that suggests a strong support system. Taken together, the two images reflect the overall mission and capabilities of the Battalion. The wavy blue bend is an allusion to the Pearl River that flows by Monticello, the unit’s home base at the time the insignia was approved.
Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
